"Dear All,

It’s that time of year when we special needs parents try to find a way to say thank you to the teachers and TAs who teach and care for our children in the form of a meaningful gift or card. But how do I say thank you?  How do I convey gratitude to the people who work with my precious son day after day, rejoice over the big and small gains, and never give up?  How do I appreciate the amazing people who have given me back my dreams and fuelled me with new hopes and helped make my whole family better? I am at a loss.

Someone once told me, “When you enter the special needs world, you meet a whole new class of people”.  My son and I have found this to be true, those of you who have come into our lives as a result of his autism have been huge blessings to us.  My son is a cutie, no doubt, but he can be quite a challenge and I’m grateful (and sometimes shocked!) that there are people besides me who love and care for him so much. I always feel the same way – there is nothing I can do that will encompass just how thankful I am to those who have helped and worked with my son.  I will try to tell you … but unless you walk in my shoes, you have no way of knowing exactly what you mean to me. Still, I will try.

Thank you for believing in my son, for your inspiration, help and support. Thank you all for all your encouragement and for listening, especially to my son’s unspoken language. Thank you for keeping him safe and for making his world at school such a happy place – for nurturing him and helping him through the tough times. Thank you for your kindness – for your excellence. You have made such an incredible difference.

I am in awe of your understanding of him, how you inspire and motivate him, how much you cherish him. I am astounded by your dedication to his progress – how nothing is too much trouble – and how you are constantly thinking up new ways to help him to improve. You have amazed me every day with your patience and love for my son.  How lucky we are to have you all in my son’s life. You must know that just as my son has become one of “yours”, so have you become “ours”.  I will forever treasure the connections we have made.

Thank you for everything"
