6th Form 5

Summer 2010 Newsletter

Students in 6F5 are in Year 13 and 14 and some will leave school in July 2010. We are fun loving, like to work hard, value our leisure time and like to have a laugh! It is good being in the ‘top’ class.

We do the usual 6th form lessons and a lot of our work is centred around independence. We are often cooking our own lunch, learning to be more independent at Wood Lodge living skills centre, going to different colleges for part of our school week, working on travel skills and using the community or taking part in PSHE, Citizenship and sports activities. Wherever possible we take part in music and drama activities and some of us benefit from multi-sensory activities.

There is also a focus on work based learning and transition in our class and we go on work experience placements or visits to learn about work and contribute ideas about where we might go when we leave school. We are all young adults in our class and like to be given the respect we deserve. Many of us contribute to a self-advocacy speaking up group and the School Council and we represent other students in the school whilst taking part in these. Some of us communicate in slightly different ways and we encourage everyone who works in our class to learn about our individual communication.

Although some of us will be sad to leave Riverside, we look forward to the next stage in our education and our work in 6F5 helps us prepare for that.
