Pupils working on the Phase 5 pathway learn new graphemes for sounds that they already know. They will also learn that the same graphemes can have alternative pronunciations, applying this when writing sentences. When pupils are nearly at the end of Phase 5, they will complete a fluency check to ensure that they are confidently applying their phonic knowledge when reading.
